Byra Reddy and Padmamma, the parents of Priya Reddy (17), who was murdered by the father for falling in love with Dalit boy Harish, have been lodged in the sub-jail in Kolar. Both were taken there after the police produced them before the JMFC court in Srinivasapur after interrogation on Tuesday.

The court remanded the accused to 14 days’ judicial custody. Their minor son, who helped the father in the crime, was sent to the Juvenile Home at Kolar Gold Fields, the police said.

Priya, a second PU student, was strangled to death by Byra Reddy at Kamatampalli in Srinivasapur taluk on Sunday night.

‘Painful’

The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has termed the incident as heinous and inhuman. “The gruesome murder of a girl by her father shows the extent of cruelty and discrimination the caste system brings in”, the CPI(M) district secretary Gandhinagar Narayanaswamy said in a press release.
