The Whitefield police have arrested a 19-year-old youth who had stolen a SUV from a private firm employee, posing as a prospective buyer.

The accused, Sunil, a student in a city college, noticed that Abhishek Kumar had put up a message on an online e-retail website that his SUV is up for sale for Rs. 8.5 lakh. Sunil called Abhishek and sought a trial ride. On June 18, Sunil met Abhishek near Vydehi Hospital and on the pretext of taking a trial ride, escaped with the car.

After waiting for over an hour, Abhishek tried to call Sunil, but the latter’s phone was switched off. Realising that he has been duped, Abhishek filed a complaint with the police.

The police alerted the control room and began to look out for the SUV. The Sarjapura patrol police noticed the vehicle parked in front of a house in Vidya Nagar. The description of the vehicle matched with the photograph the Whitefield police had shared on whatsapp.

The police rounded up Sunil and seized the vehicle. Sunil confessed that he always wanted to own a car and used to follow the information about cars and bikes online. A few days prior to the theft he came across Abhishek’s post and decided to steal the SUV.

Sunil has been booked for theft and remanded to judicial custody.
