A salesman of a shopping mall was cheated to the tune of Rs. 31,000 by a fraudster at an ATM counter in the city.

The incident happened on May 12, when one S. Venkata Satya Brahmanandam, a resident of Old Town area, tried to draw cash using his son’s card. According to the police, the victim had gone to the ATM near Maharanipeta and asked a youth present in the counter to help him draw money.

The youth operated the card and after pressing a few keys informed the victim that the card was not working. He returned the card to the victim and left the counter.

But next day, the victim received three SMSes stating that Rs. 31,000 had been drawn from three ATMs at different locations.

Sleight of hand

Basing on the SMSes, the victim approached the police on Monday and it was then that he realised that the youth had changed the card with sleight of the hand, and used it to draw the money, as the victim had mentioned the PIN number earlier to the fraudster. Police have booked a case.
