‘Make Vizag a sports hub’

A state-of-art stadium similar to Gachibowli in Hyderabad will come at Madhurawada. Young athletes advised against using performance-enhancing drugs.

Visakhapatnam has all the wherewithal to emerge as a sports hub of AP and it is the responsibility of the policy makers to use the talent available in and around the city to the optimum level for glory, according to Minister for Panchayat Raj Ayyanna Patrudu here.

Speaking at the inaugural of the 13th National Inter District Junior Athletic Meet at Port Stadium on Saturday, he said the Agency area abutting the city was well known for its inmate archery skills and an archery academy would help rookie talent emerge as world-class archers. “Similarly the city has carved a niche for itself in boxing, skating and volleyball and kabaddi. Scientific and advanced training is the need of the hour,” he added.

He said the youngsters of the fishermen community possessed the inborn swimming skills and a planned approach by policy makers would see talented swimmers emerging from the port city. Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said every Assembly was allotted one indoor stadium and the indoor stadium works at Elamanchili and Madhurawada would be completed soon. “A state-of-art stadium similar to Gachibowli in Hyderabad will come at Madhurawada,” the Minister said.
