GIM to offer honours degree in accountancy

Enters into MoU with Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

June 29, 2014 10:08 pm | Updated 10:08 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

GITAM Institute of Management (GIM) has signed a MoU with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to offer its course through B.Com (Honours) programme on GITAM University campus here from the academic year 2014-15.

As part of the curriculum, the student would study all the 17 papers of the ACCA so that no additional training is required for the ACCA examination. After successful completion of 14 papers, the student would be able to earn the “globally recognised” ACCA certification and also B.Sc. in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brooks University of the U.K.

With the ACCA qualification, the student would be eligible for employment in 180 countries and be an independent professional as well outside India. The course prepares the students to become complete finance professionals.

“Unlike the Chartered Accountancy course in India, there is no articleship, and the students would be taken as employees, drawing a salary as finance professionals,” Business Relationship Manager at the ACCA, United Arab Emirates, Ilham Punjani, said.

The students would need three years of relevant practical experience in the workplace before carrying the ACCA tag. The tag would prepare them for a challenging career as a professional accountant, she said.

The advantage of the embedded course is that the student has to pay only for ACCA examination fee, which is half of what he or she would have to pay if they take the examination independently.

“The ACCA reviews the syllabus every two years and the curriculum is in line with the industry requirement, which makes the student ready for employment in international organisations,” Dean and Principal of GIM K. Siva Rama Krishna said.
