Various moods and shades of womanhood form the primary theme of the artworks of P.D.S. Kumar displayed at an exhibition in Visakha Museum.
Taking inspiration from Raja Ravi Varma’s works, Kumar has etched different facets of a woman’s life, giving a lot of emphasis to minute details of the portraits.
“Most young artists these days stress on abstract themes, which is like a freewheeling form. But, to master the art form of portraits, a different kind of experience and training is needed. The finesse of the technique comes only with experience and effort,” says Kumar, who has also completed a vast body of work in illustrations, pocket cartoons, and mythological paintings.
A diploma holder in Fine Arts from Madras University, Kumar has done over 20,000 illustrations for Telugu dailies over the past two decades.
However, this was the first time that the artist had displayed his works at the exhibition that was inaugurated on Tuesday.
About 50 of his works have been exhibited here, which were done over a period of over one year.
Among the contemporary artists, Kumar takes inspiration from the Mumbai-based artist John Fernandes.
“The craftsmanship and fine detailing of portrait works make the piece stand apart. I learnt the finer techniques by observing artists like Fernandes. Even to make the pupil of an eye, it takes a long time. There is lot of emphasis on shadows and textures of the portraits,” he explains.
The artist’s works will be on display till April 20.
