Delegates from seven countries will attend a course designed for the first time for marine professionals by IIC Academy, which has its headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

The course on Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) will be conducted from June 20 to 24. It is being conducted under the capacity building initiative of the International Hydrographic Organisation for member countries of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission.

One participant each from Oman, Mauritius, Bahrain, Iraq, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia will attend. The course will be inaugurated by former Secretary to the Government of India Shailesh Nayak. GVMC Commissioner Pravin Kumar will be the guest speaker.

Among other dignitaries, the inaugural session will be attended by Major-General Siva Kumar (retired), who has played a pivotal role in the setting up of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) Policy in India.

Will be the single most significant asset

Explaining the importance of MSDI, IIC Academy president Shekhar Murthy has told The Hindu that the world is increasingly becoming closely connected, and data, geospatial, or otherwise, is going to be the single most significant asset for any country or organisation.

“Of course, the data held, will need to be contextually processed and analysed,” he has said.
