The district administration should take immediate steps to curb anthrax bacterial disease in the Agency area and provide quality medicare to the tribal people who have already fallen prey to it, the Girijan Sangham said.

In a representation to District Collector N. Yuvaraj here on Saturday, after a team of the association visited the patients at the King George hospital, district general secretary P. Appala Narsa said staff was inadequate at most of the PHCs in the Agency area and water-borne diseases were rampant.

He said anthrax first surfaced at Karlapodur village in Munchingput mandal, and yet no preventive steps had been taken so far in the area. He said a special team of doctors and nurses should be deputed to the Agency area to deal with the problem.

Research centre

He also urged the State Government to set up a research centre in the area to conduct research into the diseases and save the lives of Girijans.
