The 208th birth anniversary of Louis Braille was celebrated by various organisations in the city on Wednesday.

An orchestra by visually challenged artistes was the highlight at a programme, organised by the Helen Keller Memorial Association for the Blind (HKMAB), MVP Colony.

Assistant Director, Welfare of Differently-Abled and Senior Citizens Department, P. Venkateswara Rao briefed about the facilities being offered for the welfare of the differently abled. He called upon visually challenged children to make use of the facilities being extended by the department.

HKMAB president P. Beema Rao told the gathering about the facilities offered at the school with generous contributions from donors.

Deputy Manager (HR) Bikash Kumar Swain, District Blind Employees Association president K. Venkateswara Rao, and trade union leader B. Ramana were among those who spoke.

At a separate programme organised at the Government School for Blind Girls, the participants garlanded a bust of Louis Braille and paid rich tributes to him.

Louis Braille, born in January 1809, was a French educator and inventor of a system of reading and writing for use by the blind. His system is known worldwide as Braille. He died on Jan 6, 1852.

A retired Principal of the school Venkata Ratnam, convener of the Society for Good Governance SUN Murthy, M.S. Prasad, Raghavachari, Usha and Nagaraju were among those who spoke. Sweets and cakes were distributed to the children to mark the occasion.
