Priyanka wins gold in chess tournament

Delhi Public School Class VII student Nutakki Priyanka (Elo 1619) won the gold medal in Asian under-12 girls rapid chess championship held in Uzbekistan on Saturday night.

She hauled 6.5 points out of seven rounds and in the final round Priyanka defeated the top seed and Woman Fide Master (WFM) from Kazakhstan. In the standard category, Priyanka finished fourth with six points and her defeat against tournament champion Kalantari Sedigheh (Ireland) proved costly.

In the blitz segment, Priyanka bagged the bronze medal by garnering 5.5 points out of seven rounds.

In the final round, she outplayed Zahedifar Anahita (Elo 1719) of Ireland to settle for bronze. Earlier, Priyanka won Asian youth U-10 blitz championship gold in Sri Lanka in 2012.

Former Andhra Pradesh Chess Association secretary and chairman of Mustabada Sports and Educational Society V. R. Bobba congratulated his ward and said that she will be a strong contender for the gold medal in the forthcoming world under-12 chess championship to be held at South Africa in September.

Dean of DPS S.B. Rao, Director K. Praveen Kumar and Krishna District Chess Association secretary KDCA D Srihari congratulated Priyanka.
