Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday wrote to his Tamil Nadu counterpart J. Jayalalithaa urging her to allow schools to offer Telugu as the medium of instruction in her State.

Mr. Naidu pointed out to Ms Jayalalitha that such a move would fit in well with the Tamil Nadu government’s efforts to impart inclusiveness to the state’s education system.

Second language

He also wanted Tamil Nadu to continue to offer Telugu as a second language in the State’s schools.

Doing so would help the lot of Telugus residing in Tamil Nadu, Mr Naidu said.

The Chief Minister pointed out to Ms Jayalalithaa that Andhra Pradesh has always allowed minority linguistic groups to be learn their native tongue as their first language in State schools.

There are 60 schools in Andhra Pradesh that have Tamil as the medium of instruction, he said.

Reconsideation of the decision would be welcomed by the many Telugus who reside in Tamil Nadu, Mr Naidu said.
