Heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours in the city brought to the fore the long time problems of inundation of roads, loose rocks rolling down hills and others on Thursday.
Fear gripped the residents of the colonies on Moghalrajpuram hill after a huge boulder was set loose from the hill top and rolled down the street damaging the stairway path and walls of houses. The boulder crashed into an iron electric pole before stopping.
Miraculously, no casualties were reported as the boulder did not roll over the homes. East constituency M.L.A. Gadde Rammohan Rao visited the spot along with officials and consoled locals. Officials asked residents to move to government schools.
On the other hand, works pertaining to various road projects including NH expansion at Krishnalanka, laying of new roads at Siddhartha Nagar, Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road and others came to a standstill due to water logging.
This has also put motorists particularly two wheeler riders to hardship. Overflowing drains left the roads stinking all day.
According to the Indian Meteorology Department, 48.2 mm (4.8cm) of rain fall occurred over 24 hours past 8.30 a.m on Thursday.
Siddhartha Nagar, Tikkle road, Polyclinic road, Jemmi Chettu centre, Mahatma Gandhi Road and all areas of One-town, Payakapuram, Ajit Singh Nagar, Paipula Road are among the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner G. Veerapandian visited Bandar Road, State Guest House, CM Camp Office and other areas where rain water stagnated. He expressed disappointment over the stagnation despite repeated instructions to officials regarding permanent solutions for the problem. He ordered the engineering officials to ensure drains are not blocked.
Mr. Veerapandian also visited the Police Control Room junction and asked horticulture officials to develop greenery at the fountain.
