Collector holds meeting on Gannavaram airport expansion plans

Krishna District Collector Babu A. has issued instructions to officials concerned to acquire land for the expansion of Gannavaram airport and diversion of Eluru canal. A notification will be issued in this regard within a few days.

At an emergency meeting convened with officials from Revenue, Irrigation, Roads & Buildings Departments and Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Sub-Collector’s office here, he said as many as 697.02 acres would be required for the development of the airport. The airport located about 18 km from Vijayawada is proposed to be upgraded to an international airport.

The administration has earlier taken steps to acquire 431.02 acres but due to the expansion of the airport and the runway, an additional 266.90 acres would be acquired. Land for diverting Eluru canal near the airport would also be secured. The Capital Region Development Authority and the Krishna District administration have been empowered with the task of pooling land for the expansion of Gannavaram airport.
