Big time chess beckons Rajamahendravaram as the 46th National junior chess championship and 31st National junior girls’ chess championship will be held at Hotel Sheraton from October 8 to 16, according to tournament director Sridevi Guddanti, here on Friday.

The director said the tournament, which offers a cash prize of Rs. 2,50,000, will witness over 300 players from all over the country vying for honours.

TRIPS International School is the title sponsor of the event and Ascent Sports Foundation is organising the event for the first time.

“The event derives its importance from the weightage the top three medals carry by way of selection to the professional education and high-profile State and Central Government jobs,” said Andhra Pradesh Chess Association secretary D. Srihari.

He also said the top three medal winners of the Open and girls’ category events are selected to represent India in the Asian and World juniors’ events.

“They will get an opportunity to become Grand Master, Woman Grand Master, International Master or Women International Master,” he added.

Mr. Srihari said barring October 9 and 11, each day will witness one round from October 8 till the concluding day (Oct. 16).

“On Oct. 9 and 11, we will have two rounds out of the total of 11 rounds”.

The winner of Open and girls segments will get Rs. 27,000 each while the second and third places will get Rs. 21,500 and Rs 17,000 each respectively.

The event will witness over 300 players from all over the country, says tournament director
