Members of the Mahila Rakshak Teams will visit educational institutions and caution the students against indulging in eve-teasing, harassment and ragging. The teams, headed by police officers, will hold meetings in different colleges and explain them the consequences of teasing and ragging, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Law and Order) G. Pala Raju.
“Vijayawada is in seventh place on ‘women safety’, and we want to provide cent per cent safety for women in the city. As part of it, the City Police under the supervision of Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang, is taking several measures to prevent women from miscreants and teasers,” said Mr. Pala Raju and asked the public to extend cooperation their cooperation for the teams.
13 held
The teams apprehended 13 eve-teasers who were making vulgar comments against women at different places. They were released after counselling.
“Of the 13 taken into custody, two were minors and four were students. Remaining persons were in different professions. They were teasing women by following on bikes, commenting at bus bays and in moving buses and autos,” the DCP said.
Woman constable attacked
An auto driver, who was observed by a Mahila Rakshak Team member (a woman constable) at the railway station, attacked her when she was trying to shoot the indecent behaviour of the accused in her mobile phone. “The driver physically attacked the constable and snatched her mobile phone. Later, he was taken into custody and booked under Section 353 of IPC (assault or using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duties),” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP-North Zone) K. Sravani.
Harasser arrested
In a separate case, the Krishnalanka police arrested a youth, P. Shekar alias Kalyan, of Kakinada in East Godavari district, for allegedly harassing women over mobile phone.
An employee in a private company, Shekar, found a SIM card on the road about eight months ago. He was using it and was harassing women by making vulgar comments and sending objectionable messages for the last three months, said Circle Inspectors P. Chandrashekar and Sahera.
“One person who lost the SIM card did not block it. Shekar, who found it was misusing. In the call data recordings, police found that the accused was harassing four women. Following a complaint, a case has been registered and the accused was arrested,” Mahila Police Station ACP V.V. Naidu said.
