The Tamil Nadu model of sanitation is set to be adopted on a pilot basis in the Sheohar town panchayat in Bihar.

A team of officials and elected representatives from Sheohyar town panchayat visited various places in the district as part of their study to select the suitable type of toilet, design for water pipelines and management of sewerage for their State.

“Bihar in general, Sheohar town panchayat in particular, is prone to soil and water pollution. Fortunately, no major epidemic was reported despite serious pollution to the surface water,” said Randhir Lal, Executive Officer of the Nagar Panchayat. Its chairman, Anshu Mannandan Singh, said the team was impressed with the maintenance of community toilets and kitchen by women members of the self-help groups. The priority will be to educate the masses about health hazards of open defecation.

Accompanied by A. Gnanasekaran, Executive Director of Annai Trust, which will implement the sanitation programmes in Bihar, they visited various units in the district.
