Reiterating the demand for promulgation of an ordinance to facilitate conduct of jallikattu, Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan on Friday said conducting the traditional sport was a cultural right of the people of Tamil Nadu.
The Supreme Court could have banned the sport temporarily, but none could restrain the sentiments of the people. The Centre should take a policy decision to permit jallikattu and bring in the ordinance.
The State government should also reflect the sentiments of the people and explore the feasibility of conducting the sport under name of ‘aeru thazuvuthal,’ Mr.Vasan told reporters here.
Referring to the agrarian crisis due to the drought, Mr. Vasan demanded waiver of all crop loans sanctioned by cooperative societies and nationalised banks. Despite the Supreme Court orders, the Karnataka government had failed to release Tamil Nadu’s due share of water in the Cauvery.
The Centre had failed to act impartially on the issue and the State government too had failed to protect the rights of farmers, he charged. The TMC leader demanded sanction of Rs. 20 lakh to families of all farmers who committed suicide or died of shock due to the crop failure. All farmers should be fully compensated, he said.
