Emergency room opened at rail station

The State’s first Railway Emergency Room (ER) to take care of medical emergencies of rail commuters and personnel on the railway premises has started functioning at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station.

The NABH-accredited and ISO-certified fully air-conditioned ER set up near Tourist Information Centre in platform one has two beds and can cater to emergencies round the clock. Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Bajpai formally commissioned the ER in the presence of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager V.C. Sudheesh and other railway officials.

Railways had provided the prime space free of cost for the city-based PRS Hospital Pvt. Ltd. to set up the ER at a cost of Rs.12 lakh. Paramedics trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and by American Heart Association and another trained in Basic Life Science will be present in ER to take care of the emergencies.

The patients will be categorised into red, yellow, and green groups depending on the severity of the sickness. Yellow and green groups will be treated at ER while the red group will be taken to the PRS Hospital or to government hospitals in the ambulance that will be stationed 24x7 near platform I. The ER is equipped with trauma kit, airway kit, defibrillator, nebuliser, ECG, suction pump, spine board among other things. Only commuters with bonafide tickets and railway personnel will get medical assistance from the ER.
