Compulsory Malayalam in PSC test

Take legal action, SHRC tells government

July 18, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued directions to the government to take suitable legal action on the demand that testing of proficiency in Malayalam be made compulsory for examinations conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC). A press note issued here said the directive was issued by commission chairperson J.B. Koshy. The commission did not have the authority to take action on the demand that the secretariat assistant examination be cancelled because proficiency in Malayalam was not gauged as part of the test. If the commission intervened, it would adversely affect all those who wrote the test. There was also a complaint that those who studied in the Malayalam medium were neglected in the said test. A complaint submitted to the commission said there should be at least 20 per cent questions for testing proficiency in Malayalam language in the examination conducted by the PSC. The complaint was submitted by Malayala Samithi. — Special Correspondent
