CET incident: accused in judicial custody

Baiju K. Balakrishnan, the accused in the case involving the death of a third year engineering student of the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, was remanded by a local court here on Monday.

The accused, who hails from Kannur, was produced before Nobel D.S., Judicial First Class Magistrate III, Thiruvananthapuram, and remanded in judicial custody until September 4. He had been charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, destruction of evidence and unlawful assembly, the police said. The police have filed an application in the court seeking custody of the accused for further investigation and collection of evidence.

Baiju, who had driven the jeep which had fatally hit Thasni Basheer during Onam celebrations at the college, had surrendered before the police on Sunday.

The investigating team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin, are on the lookout for others who have been identified in connection with the case.
