Better grasp of English, via U.S. programme

The Women’s Muslim Association (WMA) is the service provider for the programme in Thiruvananthapuram since 2005. It was the fourth batch of students that graduated on Sunday under the WMA, with 100 students each for every batch.

Certificates for those who completed the English Access Micro-scholarship programme organised at the Cordova Public School were presented here on Sunday.

The Regional English Language Officer (RELO) Bradley Horn presented certificates to 100 students who completed the programme, which was held at the school under the aegis of the Women’s Muslim Association (WMA) through the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai.

Giving away the certificates, Mr. Horn encouraged the students to play a constructive role in making their community and the world a more tolerant and inclusive place. The English Access Micro-scholarship Programme, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides a foundation of English language skills to bright, economically disadvantaged children aged between 13 and 20 year through two years of after-school instruction and intensive sessions. Since its inception in 2004, over 1,00,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the programme. In India, 6,000 Indian students have benefited since 2004, with 2,000 students currently attending the sessions at Ahmedabad, Aligarh, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kolkata, Puducherry, and Vaniyambadi, according to a press release.
