Arya Premji -- icon of Namboodiri widows -- remembered

She set a revolutionary example by marrying actor Premji after being widowed.

An icon of struggle among Namboodiri widows, Arya Premji was remembered in a seminar at Government College for Women in the capital on Thursday.

She had set a revolutionary example by marrying Premji, veteran actor and writer at a time when widow remarriages were condemned as social taboo.

Women’s struggles of her times were based on the realisation that nation’s freedom is rooted in the freedom of each individual woman from conventional taboos and restrictions, Chairperson of Kerala Sthree Padana Kendram, T. N. Seema said.

Her courage is a strong reminder to women in today’s social scenario, the former MP said. ‘

Amma’, a national award winning short film on Mrs.Premji , made by her son Neelan, film-maker and journalist was also screened.
