: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai on Friday directed the Deputy Commissioner to take possession of Kumki land held in excess by farmers in the district and arrange its distribution among people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and ex-servicemen who do not have land.

Speaking at the inauguration of Haadi Vaastavya of Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya at the tribal hamlet Kerekadu in Padupanambur Gram Panchayat near here, Mr. Rai said that there were thousands of landless people in the district. Many farmers were in possession of acres of ‘kumki’ land, which was nothing but government land. At the same time, “DC manna land”, meant for Scheduled Castes, had been encroached upon, he said.
