A second year B.Com student of a city college was arrested and, later, released on bail on the charge of spreading a rumour about the death of a lecturer of a Pre-University College in Puttur on WhatsApp.

According to the Puttur Town police, two years ago Vinut S., who was studying in the Puttur college, had allegedly been ridiculed by his English lecturer.

With an intention to seek revenge, Vinut posted a message on a WhatsApp group of the Pre-University College students on August 25, 2016, that the lecturer had died.

The police said this message created panic among students and also to relatives and friends of the lecturer.

They went to lecturer’s house and then found the message to be a prank. The lecturer filed a complaint seeking action against the perpetrator. During the investigation, the police found Vinut had created the message and had forwarded it.
