‘Revoke ban on sand extraction’

July 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - MANGALURU:

The Dakshina Kannada District Sand Extractor Owners and Workers Federation on Tuesday urged the government to reconsider the two-month ban on sand extraction from rivers in the coastal regulatory zone and allow use of steel/ fibre boats for extracting sand.

Federation president B. Naveen Chandra told presspersons here that enough sand was available naturally and the government should ban manufactured sand. There should not be restriction on deploying machinery to load and unload sand while the sand would be extracted manually, he said.

The sand policy had been affecting thousands of people depending on the sand and construction industry and it should be simplified, he said.

A memorandum had been given to the district sand monitoring committee and if no positive action was taken, the federation would launch a protest, he said.
