Mangalore kids bag karate honours

Two children from the city took home a total of eight medals at the 11 All India Open Karate Championship held in Vishakhapatnam recently.

Saloni Poojary, a student of Amrita Vidyalaya in the city, won five gold medals, which included honours in: kumite (40-45 kg category), individual kata, team kata, weapon and rotation team kumite events.

Similarly, Sweekrth Salian, a student of BGS Education Centre in Kavoor, won three medals in the championship. While he won Silver in the individual Kata (12-16 years age category), he took gold medals in the team kata and kumite (40-45 kg) categories, said a release.

Both were students of the Bharathiya Vidyabhavan Institute of Karate and Allied Arts.

The competitions – for brown belt holders who are under 14 years of age – were held between February 7 and 9 at the Swarnabharati indoor stadium in Visakhapatnam.
