Bava College to get a final warning

May 26, 2014 01:15 pm | Updated 01:15 pm IST - Mangalore:

With a committee of Mangalore University finding the infrastructure not “congenial for educational purposes” at the Bava’s College of Commerce, the university has decided to serve it a final warning.

It is run by Bava Haji Education and Charitable Trust where B.A. Mohiuddin Bava, Mangalore City North MLA, is a trustee.

During the university’s Academic Council meeting here on Saturday, a resolution was passed to send the college a final warning, following which the university would initiate action if its “glaring” faults were not rectified within a week.

The report by a three-member Local Inquiry Commissioner (LIC) was sent to the college to look at its request for renewal of affiliation recommendations scrapping of the affiliation. University authorities said 28 students (20 in final year and 8 in II year B.Com) study at the college.

T.N. Shreedhara, LIC chairman, said the college was “not serious” about the conditions and suggestions put forward during its previous inspections when the college was given conditional affiliation on “humanitarian grounds”.

“In the past three years the conditions and shortfalls have increased…it would be a crime on the students if we allowed the college to continue,” said Mr. Shreedhara at the meeting.

The commission observed that the term of lease of the college, which runs from eight rooms on the fourth floor of a commercial complex on Kuloor-Kavoor road, has expired. “The college space is not properly maintained… the building is not at all congenial for educational purpose. Classrooms are not insulated from noise and disturbance,” said the report.

Moreover, the college doesn’t have a phone, has an under-equipped library manned by unqualified personnel, and has no facility for sports activities, said the LIC report.

The commission observes that the principal is “not experienced enough…not qualified”, has put “nil” against achievements of staff, and states there are “discrepancies” in the records for the salary of the staff, who are “paid in cash”.

Udupi MLA and member of the council Pramod Madhwaraj asked the university to withhold fresh admissions, while allowing the current batches to graduate. Though the LIC was vehement in its recommendation to cancel the affiliation, University Registrar P. S. Yadapadithaya said a notice would be sent after which a one-man commission will be asked to take stock of action taken.
