In a freak accident, a 69-year-old woman, S. Meenakshi Sundari, died after she fell down from the fourth floor of an apartment here after opening the door of the lift that got stuck on the fifth floor on Saturday.

However, a family member said that the woman could have lost her balance due to giddiness because of her old age. Meenakshi Sundari, wife of P. Sankaran (74), former Personal Assistant in the office of the Commissioner of Police, was in a hurry to take luggage from her flat on the 5{+t}{+h}floor of the apartment on Bharatiyar Main Road in S.S. Colony. The family members were getting ready to leave for Coimbatore to attend the wedding reception of her daughter, who got married on Thursday. “She was in a hurry to leave for Coimbatore at an auspicious time,” the woman family member said. Stating that Meenakshi Sundari had been trained to open the lift door with the emergency opener, the family member said that while the lift car got stuck on the fifth floor, the deceased had tried to open the door on the fourth floor. As the door opened, she could have lost her balance and fallen down, she said. She said no one was inside the lift car when it got stuck. The incident occurred at 7.50 a.m. The woman was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital where she was declared dead. S.S. Colony police have registered a case of unnatural death.
