A three-member gang stabbed a teacher, A. Mariam Selvam (54), and snatched her three-sovereign chain while she was walking to her house near Paravai on Thursday evening.
Police said that the woman, who was teaching at a school in the city, had got down from a bus at All India Bank Employees’ Colony bus stop. While her school-going daughter, who had accompanied her, cycled towards home, the woman went on foot.
Three persons who came on a motorcycle intercepted her. Two of them got down from the vehicle and tried to snatch her gold chain. “When the woman offered resistance, one of them pulled out a knife and stabbed on her abdomen and yanked the gold chain,” Deputy Superintendent of Police of Samayanallur A. Velmurugan said.
The woman raised an alarm and collapsed on the road as she started bleeding profusely. Those who noticed her writhing in pain rushed her to a private hospital in the city. After she was given first-aid, the woman was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital.
Police sources said that the woman was operated upon for the grievous stab injury.
The Samayanallur police have registered a case of robbery, hurting while robbing and attempt-to-murder under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police are on the lookout for some of the suspects in the locality.
