A girl studying class IX in a city school died of dengue symptoms at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on Tuesday.

A. Benazir (14) of Keelasandhaipettai on Kamarajar Salai here, who fell sick, was admitted to the fever ward at the GRH over 10 days ago. However, she did not respond to treatment and died at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Her family members accused the corporation authorities of negligence in mosquito control in residential areas, and said the girl died because of lack of preventive measures.

When contacted, B. Santhakumar, Dean, GRH, said the girl died of viral hemorrhagic fever as per medical investigations.

“She was put on ventilator support but there was a complication in her kidneys. The blood count level had fallen down and blood platelets were infused to save her,” he added. City Health Officer V. Yasodha Mani said she had asked for a complete report of sanitation in Kamarajar Salai area. Meanwhile, Collector L. Subramanian called an emergency meeting with health department and corporation health officials on Wednesday.
