Around four sovereigns of gold jewellery used for the deity of the Mariamman Temple in Jeeva Nagar were reported stolen on Monday morning.

Police sources said that unidentified men had gained entry into the temple by breaking open the door at the backside of the temple, which is located in a thickly populated area.

The gang allegedly accessed the jewel box kept inside the temple and decamped with the gold.

The incident, which must have happened in the early hours of Monday, came to light later in the morning, police said.

Based on the complaint lodged by P. Kannan (55), who is part of the temple management, the Jaihindpuram police have registered a case.
