Inter-caste marriage: woman alleges threat from parents

May 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Madurai:

Apprehending trouble from her parents, R. Parameswari (26), a native of Thanjavur district, has taken refuge in Evidence, an NGO based here, and sought police protection.

Trouble started after Ms. Parameswari’s parents objected to her plans to marry R. Satishkumar (29), also from Thanjavur district. While she belongs to Yadava community, Mr. Satishkumar is a Dalit.

According to a press release from Evidence executive director A. Kadir, both Mr. Satishkumar and Ms. Parameswari were well-educated and worked as teachers in government higher secondary schools in Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts. They were known to each other for the last two years.

When Ms. Parameswari expressed her desire to marry Mr. Satishkumar, her parents objected to it, and allegedly threatened to “finish her off”. Hence, she fled her home a week ago and lodged a police complaint.

A marriage certificate, issued by the Sub-Registrar, Tirukkuvulai, showed that the marriage was registered on May 6, 2016.

Following a threat from her father Rangasamy, Ms. Parameswari approached the Madras High Court Bench here, which directed the police to give her protection.

Mr. Kadir said that based on the court order Evidence representatives submitted a petition to the Thanjavur Superintendent of Police, who assured them that he would look into the issue.

Mr. Kadir said that the Director of School Education should transfer Ms. Parameswari to the place where Mr. Satishkumar was working in view of the threat to her life. He also demanded action by the government against those issuing threat to her.
