The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday directed a lower court in Melur near here to expedite the hearing in a case registered by the district police against former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri and his supporters for allegedly assaulting a Tahsildar inside a temple on April 1, 2011.
Disposing of a petition filed by V. Balu, one of the accused in the case, Justice S. Vaidyanathan directed a Judicial Magistrate in Melur not to adjourn the hearing in the case for more than two days after the police completed further investigation, as ordered by the Magistrate, and filed a revised charge sheet.
The petitioner had sought early disposal of the case after accusing the police of purposefully dragging the investigation in the case. On its part, the prosecution informed the court that it was the Magistrate who had ordered further investigation in the case after the filing of the charge sheet.
According to the police, the former Minister and his supporters had assaulted the Tahsildar, M. Kalimuthu, since he had directed his subordinates to record on video a meeting convened by the politicians inside the temple during the 2011 Assembly elections.
