Train collision averted

February 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - KOCHI:

A MEMU train that overshot the signal at Vaikom Road railway station stopped short of ramming into the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Jansatabdhi Express, on Monday morning.

“The loco pilot of Kollam-Ernakulam MEMU did not see the newly-installed signal near the station and approached the track at the station where the Jansatabdhi Express was standing. On coming to know of his mistake, he applied sudden brake and stopped the MEMU that was approaching the station on the wrong track,” a senior Railway official said. The MEMU came as close as 500 metres of the stationary train. The trains were held up at the station for an hour following the incident. A new signal had been installed after cut and connection works were done at the station on January 27. The loco pilot claimed that he was not familiar with the new signal system. An internal probe has been ordered, Railway sources said.
