The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad, is home to 25 species of amphibians and 37 species of reptiles. The amphibian and reptile diversity of the sanctuary was recorded through a comprehensive survey conducted day and night.
The presence of Malabar Tree Toad, tadpoles of Purple Frog, Rufascent Burrowing Frog, Variable Bush Frog, Painted Frog, Kerala Mud Snake, Coastal Day Gecko and Collared Cat Snake were also recorded.
This was for the first time that the amphibian and reptile diversity of the sanctuary was estimated, forest officials said.
Besides the officials of the sanctuary, naturalists and around 30 volunteers took part in the survey, which was inaugurated by R. Sugathan, renowned ornithologist. — Special Correspondent
