Christians in the city joined millions of their counterparts across the world to celebrate Easter with traditional ceremonies in churches and congregations across the city.

Easter is the culmination of the Lenten season, ending with the Passion week during which the betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is recalled.

Major Archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, led the faithful at ceremonies that began ahead of midnight on Saturday at the St. Mary’s Basilica in the city. Archbishop Francis Kallarakkal led the ceremonies at the St. Francis Assisi Cathedral in the city.

Joseph Mar Gregorios, Synod Secretary of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, led the faithful in Easter celebrations at the St. George’s Cathedral in Karingachira.

Fr. Jacob John, vicar, led the ceremonies at the CSI Immanuel Church on the Broadway. An Easter message from the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council said the celebration of the resurrection of Christ was a reminder that those who take the side of the poor and underprivileged would be eternal.
