In a joint operation, the police and the Drugs Control Department have foiled an attempt by a Nagpur-based pharmaceutical firm to sell bottles of antiseptic solution even after the date of expiry.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials of the departments raided a shop at Kalamassery and seized 300 cartons of 500 ml bottles of surgical spirit. The seized items are worth around Rs.3 lakh.

Relabelled bottles

They found 6,000 bottles of surgical spirit and 90 per cent of them had been relabelled with a new expiry date, December 2019. They said that the shop did not have the licence to keep drugs.

The officials said the bottles had been originally brought for supplying to Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL). However, the KMSCL refused to accept the bottles after finding violation of tender conditions by the firm.

A case has been registered against the firm under the provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The seized bottles of spirit were produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court, Kalamassery.
