Akshaya centres press the SOS button

Unfeasible locations and inability to diversify pose troubles to Akshaya centres

Unsuitable location and lack of entrepreneurial acumen to look beyond delivery of government services have threatened several Akshaya centres in the district.

Akshaya centres are active in 212 out of the 261 locations identified in the district for their operations with several entrepreneurs having left the scene after accumulating losses.

Even the district Akshaya Project’s recent notification inviting applications for 39 centres is not free of location-specific troubles despite the seemingly good online response from 160 potential entrepreneurs.

Half of these centres had failed to evoke any response when notified several times in the past, thanks to unattractive locations where their feasible operation was remote.

“Locations for Akshaya centres were mapped almost a decade ago for the e-literacy project. Since the objective was to ensure maximum access to the project, multiple centres were allotted even in remote areas,” K.M. Ibrahim, district coordinator, Akshaya Project, told The Hindu .
