The Telangana Telugu Desam Party (TTDP) has sought the help of Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in taking the construction of “illegal” projects across Krishna river by the neighbouring Karnataka Government to the notice of the Central Government.

A delegation of the TTDP leaders led by E. Dayakar Rao called on the Governor and submitted a memorandum to him in this regard.

They wanted the Governor to impress upon the Central Government the need to send representatives from the statutory bodies like the Central Water Commission to inspect the unauthorised projects and stop the construction work forthwith.

They complained that the Karnataka Government was constructing barrages at different locations without the approval of the authorities concerned.

In addition, works were underway to increase the height of Alamatti dam from 519 metres to 524 metres for which the Government had acquired 1.25 lakh acres of land.

Arrangements had been made to evict residents of Bagalkot town and its surrounding villages even as Rs. 104 crore had been released for construction of a barrage at Girijapur.

The works launched by the Karnataka Government were detrimental to the interests of the lower riparian States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh which were already suffering due to shortage of drinking and irrigation water.

Though the matter had been taken to the notice of the Telangana Government after the TTDP delegation conducted field visit to the project sites, the Government remained “irresponsible and indifferent”.

It had failed to lodge a complaint with the Central Government so far even as a section of Ministers behaved rudely with the TTDP members who tried to call on them.
