Government trying to malign my image, says Uma Madhav Reddy

Judicial probe sought into Nayeem’s activities

August 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 11:14 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Former Minister and Telugu Desam Party leader A. Uma Madhav Reddy has demanded that the State government order a judicial inquiry into the activities of gangster Nayeem to unearth the facts pertaining to the case, even as the TDP Telangana State unit had extended its support to the senior leader.

Ms. Uma alleged that the government was trying to malign her personal image as well as the image of the family by “selective leaks” of the inquiry under way into the activities of Nayeem. She strongly refuted the reports in a section of media which alleged that Nayeem was in touch with the family and “ a number of calls were made from her mobile phone to the gangster” who was killed in an encounter a couple of days ago.

Asserting that she was using a single mobile since the days of Madhav Reddy, she demanded that the government make public the call data record of her phone to prove the claims.

“The government appeared to have targeted the community” from which she hailed going by the manner in which her name was being dragged into the case.

She also refuted the reports which alleged that her family had encouraged gangsters like Nayeem with an eye on coming back to power. She said her stint as Minister was brief and she was in the opposition for two terms after the Congress came to power. She asserted that her family had no businesses or interests in the real estate and there was no question of encouraging any mafia.

“People gave their verdict and I will wait till the next elections. My family has lost its head (Madhav Reddy) because of Naxalites and we know how painful it is,” she said lamenting over the manner in which her name was being dragged into the case in spite of the fact that she was a woman. She said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao should take the responsibility of bringing her name into the case as the “selective leakage of such confidential information will not be possible without him being informed about it”.

“The government is adopting a vindictive attitude against our family,” she said. Ms. Uma’s son A. Sandeep Reddy said several of Nayeem’s associates were with the ruling TRS and the government should order a judicial inquiry or a probe by the CBI to unearth the facts.
