Robbers snatch Rs. 3.49 lakh after opening fire

Close on the heels of the police busting a robbery committed at gunpoint two days ago near Charminar, in a separate case two armed robbers made off with Rs. 3.49 lakh from two persons after opening fire with a pistol in Santoshnagar on Wednesday.

The South zone police were just about getting ready to send the three accused they had arrested in Charminar case to the court when they learnt about the fresh robbery carried out during daytime. A railway employee Balaraju and his son Rajesh Kumar, private company executive, were returning home after withdrawing cash from a bank at Midhani crossroads around 3 p.m. when the robbers came on a bike.

“One was wearing helmet. Both were carrying firearms believed to be pistols and tried to snatch the backpack containing cash from Rajesh,” South zone DCP V. Satyanarayana said. As Rajesh resisted, one of the robbers fired a shot with his firearm onto the ground, apparently to scare the two men.

They grabbed the bag and sped away towards Chandrayanagutta even as shocked passers-by watched helplessly. The police believe the offenders had used a country-made pistol and the bullet was of 7.45 mm calibre.

Investigators are verifying movements of gangs which committed robberies in similar fashion earlier in the city. Crucial clue came in the form of video footage recorded by surveillance cameras on the road. Police are examining the footage to narrow down on suspects. This is the second robbery in past three days committed using firearms in the city after the KBR Park incident.
