Pre-police recruitment programme launched

Even before they joined the police force, they vied with each other to be seen with the top guns. Young men and women gathered around Hyderabad Commissioner M. Mahender Reddy no sooner the pre-police recruitment training programme inaugural ceremony ended here on Tuesday.

Anxious aspirants, all from the old city, gathered in hundreds at Quli Qutb Shah Stadium near High Court in the early hours to improve their chances of recruitment in the force. The two-month programme will train aspirants to perform in the physical and written examinations that the Police Department is expected to conduct in the coming months.

The programme was launched by Home Minister N. Nayani Narasimha Reddy, who said that notifications for around 3,000 vacancies in Hyderabad and Cyberabad police will be issued shortly. A team headed by M. Shiva Prasad, Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) have prepared study material and physical training routine. “It is a good opportunity. Private institutions charge thousands of rupees for coaching candidates,” said Arshad Ali, who recently cleared Intermediate. Many like Ali were seen buying shoes, track-wear and other training equipment outside the Quli Qutb Shah Stadium.

However, the number of women aspirants was relatively small compared to men, despite the government’s assurance to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the force. “Women should come forward and apply for the jobs as it gives immense scope for them to serve the society,” the Home Minister said.

Following a proposal from Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi for extending the training programme to other districts of Telangana, Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali said he would take up the matter with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar, who was also present on Tuesday, said that the corporation will provide free food to aspirants attending the training programmes.
