Lab technician in police custody

May 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Hyderabad:

The city police on Friday took custody of Narender Kumar, the Sultan Bazar Maternity Hospital Lab Technician, who is accused of cheating patients and blood banks.

Narender made headlines last week when drug control agencies raided his house and found empty blood packets and labels of voluntary blood banks. The technician managed to give authorities the slip and holed himself at a relative’s place in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. On receiving a tip-off and with the help of local police there, he was nabbed on May 25. City police officials said they would grill him over the next few days.

Allegations levelled against him include removing labels of unused blood and affixing newer ones by fudging details of its collection and logistics. It is also rumoured that he may have adulterated blood, though police officials say this is subject of verification.

“Our investigations are underway. Evidence is being gathered and the involvement of other people is also being considered. At this stage, it is difficult to say what he exactly did,” said a police official involved in the investigation. The official added the possibility of adulteration is not ruled out.

Word that blood available at Sultan Bazar maternity hospital is adulterated caused uproar at the hospital. Many patients were seen procuring blood from private blood banks out of fear that the blood at the hospital may be contaminated.
