The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Surgical Society has resolved to illuminate monuments and historical buildings in all its member-countries in October to create awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and replicate the successful ‘Pink Ribbon Campaign’ pioneered by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation in the city.

Initiative

According to Dr. P. Raghuram, president, Association of Breast Surgeons of India, the initiative was taken up at the annual congress of college of surgeons of Sri Lanka currently under way in Colombo, where he had made a presentation at the SAARC breast cancer symposium.

Transforming healthcare

He had highlighted the measures taken in the last eight years which had helped transform the delivery of breast healthcare in India like the screening programme taken up in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

About 1,000 delegates, including surgeons from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives apart from India are participating, a press release said.
