Haritha Haram is good initiative

June 30, 2014 12:53 am | Updated 12:53 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The idea of having a ‘Haritha Haram’ and in the process having a green cover in one-third of our State is laudable and needs wholehearted support from citizens. However, mere plantation of saplings during rainy season without follow up care and nurturing will not yield results. For the success of such schemes, officials, social workers and NGOs should work together. Minimum survival rates have to be prescribed to ensure proper watering during summer. Allotment of government lands on long lease to NGOs to maintain plantations could be a novel way of increasing the green cover.

Awareness on enhancing greenery

To make Hyderabad a garden city, authorities should be strict in making people follow rules and regulations. The Government should hold a series of campaigns and work shops to make people aware of the importance of enhancing greenery. Penalties should be levied if people fell trees. A lot of effort should be made to make the yearly Vanamahotsav celebrations more exciting for the younger generation.

Water bodies, boon or bane?

Having a river like Musi, flowing through the city and a lake like Hussain Sagar located in the centre of a city is a rare blessing for which everybody in Hyderabad should be thankful. However, these two water bodies have become liabilities instead of assets. Both continue to remain in a miserable State. The Musi has become a source for many health problems to residents in the vicinity. The Chief Minister should ask officials to take up Musi and Hussain Sagar revival activities at the earliest.

Name boards of city buses

The condition of name boards of city buses is so pathetic that even in daytime they are hardly visible or readable. The less said about them in night time, the better. Is it really so tough to repaint boards and fit illuminated boards for night time visibility on front and rear sides of vehicles? A system can be introduced in buses to announce the name of the next bus stop, which is already under implementation Bangalore. Buses also must be made to necessarily halt at all the stops meant for them and not to speed away at the whims and fancies of the crew.
