Some of the allegations of corruption against police officials made by deceased Kukunoorpally Sub Inspector T. Ramakrishna Reddy in his suicide note were found to be true by investigators conducting an inquiry into his death, said senior police sources. The interim inquiry report stating the same was submitted to the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) on Wednesday.

Akun Sabharwal, DIG, Hyderabad Range, who was asked to conduct an inquiry into the deceased SI’s suicide, had submitted his interim report to the DGP on Wednesday, said the official. The inquiry was conducted by him and Medak Superintendent of Police, Chandrasekhar Reddy. The official informed that the statements of 17 persons were recorded as part of the inquiry which was conducted.

“All the material like recordings and other interim findings were submitted to the DGP. However, we are waiting for the report to still tell us about the exact cause of the SI’s death,” stated the official. The primary recordings in the case were submitted by Mr. Pratap Reddy, Additional Superintendent of Police, Nizamabad, and was handed over to Mr. Sabharwal and Mr. Chandrasekhar Reddy.

The official also said that the deceased SI may have taken the extreme step, fearing that action would be taken against him for alleged graft, as 11 policemen were suspended in the Hyderabad Range area, by the DIG in the last three months. A week before Ramakrishna Reddy committed suicide on August 17, another SI from the Gauraram police station was also suspended for certain violations.

It was this crackdown on erring officials who are alleged to be corrupt, which may have led to Ramakrishna Reddy committing suicide, said the official. “In fact, some days before he committed suicide, two anonymous letters had surfaced against him. While there is some truth to his words, some of what he has written in his suicide note is not true,” said the official.

Corruption charges

The official said that the Kukunoorpally and Siddipet police stations in the Hyderabad Range are known to have corruption charges against them. “Money is collected illegally from trucks carrying sand from rivulets in Karimnagar and also coal. The share goes to all police officials. After the new DIG was appointed, they are now afraid of action being taken against them,” he added.

Ramakrishna Reddy, shot himself with his service revolver at his quarters on August 17 and left a three-page suicide note in which he alleged that he was harassed by the DSP Ch. Sridhar and other police officials.

He also mentioned that they were involved in corruption. All those whom he named were later attached to other offices to conduct a fair inquiry.
