More than 4,000 people gathered here on Sunday to participate in the Yashoda Cancer Awareness Walk - 2016 organised by Yashoda Hospitals at the Saroornagar stadium, as part of a programme creating awareness on World Cancer Day.

Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare of Telangana Dr. C. Laxma Reddy, who was the chief guest of the event, flagged-off the programme. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the State government is determined to improve standards of healthcare, and that all government hospitals will be upgraded on par with corporate hospitals shortly. Managing Director of Yashoda Hospitals Dr. G.S. Rao said that an estimated 10 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer every year and this number could rise significantly if preventive measures are not taken. He added that a major issue with the disease is that people do not realise its symptoms till it is too late.

The four-kilometre walk which started from the Saroornagar stadium proceeded up to Kothapet before returning back. Oncologists, doctors, nurses, and other staff members of Yashoda Hospitals also joined the programme. Several events were organised across the city to create awareness among the people.
