A seventh standard student from the city, Muzammil Pasha, bagged the IGNITE 2014 award for designing a shoe which would reduce knee pain. The award was presented to him by former President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, at a function in IIM Ahmedabad few days ago.

Muzammil designed a heel of a shoe by correcting its gravity line. “The weight of persons with obesity falls on the knee resulting in knee pain. So I modified the regular heel by adding extra leather at the arch filling, back shield and strips. It gives support and comfort and helps reduce the knee pain,” he explains.

Initial experiments

He said that it took around a year for him to design the shoes. “I started the experiment with wooden and metal plates and then I used leather. The heel design differs from person to person depending upon his requirement,” Muzammil says.

The boy showcased his design at the IGNITE 2014 organised by the National Innovation Foundation. “The foundation has already applied for patent and will be introducing it for the armed forces shortly,” Muzammil’s father Chand Pasha claimed.

His father is an Assistant Professor in Osmania University. “I have a busy schedule, yet I manage to take off time considering the enthusiasm of my child,” Mr. Pasha says, adding “I hope to see him become a scientist one day.”

Muzammil also designed an electromagnetic radiation shield which if embedded in mobile phones reduces the radiation from contacting the human body. “The shield has been prepared using different metals and reduces the radiation levels by 80 per cent,” he claims. He presented the model at the 22 National Children’s Science Congress 2014 at Nizamabad on Monday and the model was selected for the national event scheduled to be next month.
