Youth held for opening fake FB account, befriending man, stealing

May 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - New Delhi:

A 27-year-old youth opened a fake Facebook account to befriend an unsuspecting man, win his trust and steal from his house.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Kishan Gopen Meitei, an employee with a private firm. He lives with his friend Bonny in a rented accommodation in North Delhi’s Gandhi Vihar.

A few months ago, Meitei had received a Facebook friend request from someone who introduced himself as Sonu, a fake name. The two got along and the two decided to meet at Meitei’s residence for a small party on May 2.

Party plan

The police said that Imran came to Delhi all the way from his hometown in Bulandshahar.

Meitei decided to sponsor the party and got beer for Imran and his roommate.

“The accused intentionally ensured that Meitei and his roommate consumed excess alcohol. That caused the two to pass out after the party,” said Ravindra Yadav, Joint CP (Crime). “He stole a laptop, two expensive watches, four high-end mobile phones, sunglasses and some cash,” said Mr. Yadav on Wednesday.

The theft was discovered next morning and a case was registered with the Timarpur police station in North Delhi. The case was later handed over to the Crime Branch. The police said a tip-off that the suspect in this case would be coming near Akshardham Temple on Tuesday to sell off the stolen items led to the arrest. Imran was allegedly trying to sell one of the stolen watches to people visiting the temple.
