: Stigmatised and in a state of shock, the victim in the Inderpuri brutality case concealed the incident from everyone for a day and would have kept it a secret if not for an unexpected occurrence, said his family members.

Although his mother had seen him returning home naked on the day of the incident, he explained his predicament to her as a scuffle he had had with boys in the neighbourhood and had not brought up the fact that the five accused had made efforts to insert a beer bottle into his private parts.

“On Tuesday, one of his friends received a video on WhatsApp and came rushing to our house to show it to everyone. When my son saw that the video they had made after stripping him had gone public, he broke down and narrated the whole incident to us and explained how Sunny Rana (the absconding accused) and others had tortured him,” said the boy’s mother. When she learnt the details, she discussed the matter with members in the block where they live. Joined by some of them, her next destination was Sachin’s house to confront him.

Accused unapologetic

To their surprise, added a neighbour and a community head of the area, Sachin and others were completely “defiant and unapologetic” about the whole episode.

Co-accused Shankar, Sumit, Aman and Raju were also there, they added.

“‘Why have you come here?’ was Sunny’s first reaction. When we showed him the video and asked why they had tortured my son, he turned aggressive and said ‘Tune sher ke moo mein haath daala hai (You’ve entered the jaws of a tiger)’, ” said the mother. The presence of community elders also wasn’t a deterrent for the accused. Instead they kept claiming that the police could not do anything to them.

Cop remains mute

The boy’s family alleged that the area constable was also present there but remained a mute spectator. It was only when the argument heated up that more policemen arrived and took Sumit, Aman and Raju to the police station where the family claims to have showed videos of the assault to the police.
